Giovanni Soccol was born in Venice in 1938 and began painting in the early 1950’s. He often visited the atelier of the Viennese painter, Ilse Bernheimer and later frequented the studio of Gennaro Favai, a Venetian artist. In 1956, Soccol enrolled in a Free-thinking School of nudes at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice and a year later in the Faculty of Architecture. For the next 10 years he alternates his university studies with painting, (Summer Courses at the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie ), ultimately attaining his degree in Architecture under Carlo Scarpa in 1967. He continued to paint under the guidance of Guido Cadorin. Lengthy periods were spent in Paris during which time he formed a profound friendship with Lèon Gischia, set designer, Jean Vilar and the chemist, Marc Havel. In 1968 Giovanni shares a teaching position with Mario De Luigi professor of Set Designing at the Academy of Fine Arts, a position he himself obtains in 1974. In these years, he intensively researches the field of abstract art and abandons his more figurative style of the 50’s. Thus the origin of his cycle, “Presenze-Assenze”, “Visions” and “Months” which will distinguish his style throughout the 1980’s. His interest in stage/scene designing, both in theatre as well as cinema, continues to develop. Soccol makes several important contributions collaborating with the International “Cantiere” of Art in Montepulciano and later with the Royal Opera in Stockholm. |
