Mimmo Paladino was born in Paduli, Benevento on December 18, 1948 where his artistic studies from 1964-1968 were completed. This was a time when art was dominated by Minimalism and Conceptualism. During the first phase Paladino was principally concerned with photography while he continued to sharpen his talents as a gifted designer. 1977 was the year of his first one-man exhibition at the Lucio Amelia Gallery in Naples with an enormous pastel on the gallery walls. He also participated in the “International Triennial for Zeichnung” which was organized in Wroclaw. The years from 1978 to 1980 are transitory for the artist as he contemplates his initial conceptual theories as opposed to a new interest in figurative painting. This period produces monochromatic work with decisive colors upon which emerge geometric figures, perhaps even pieces of copper or masks. The beginning of the 1980’s are characterized by his affirmation of the importance of referential painting. At the “Aperto ‘80” of the Biennial of Art in Venice, the critic Achille Bonito Olivo proposes the Transavanguardi Movement which includes Paladino, Chia, Clemente and Cuccchi. A movement which through allegory and symbolism attempted to renew the marvel, mystery and the magic found in contemporary art. Important international exhibitions followed – The Biennial of Venice, of San Paolo in Brazil, the Biennial of Lubiana, the Tate Gallery of London, the Mirò Foundation of Barcelona, the Biennial of Paris, Kunthaus of Basel, the National Museum of Peiking, Fort Belvedere of Florence, the Royal Museum of Fine Arts (Museè Royale des Beaux Arts) in Belgium, and more. In 1980 EN DE RE by Emilio Mazzoli was published, with text by Achille Bonita Oliva. Paladino made several trips to Brazil during 1982-85, held a retrospective exhibition in the Lenbachhause, Munich (1985) and created a permanent installation at the cloisters of San Domenico, Benevento. Largely due to this continual exposure, Paladino’s art became internationally known and was extremely well received. The artist immortalizes figures and obsessive forms often taking his inspiration from the art and work of different cultures, both past and present. The visual expression in his art is neither narrative nor essential, but rather fluid and ambiguous. As he expresses it, art should not give answers nor formulate questions. Paladino has had numerous personal exhibitions in public museums and private galleriesworldwide. His paintings and sculptures are found in important public areas as well as in prestigious collections, both institutional and private. worldwide.
