Sandro Chia was born in Florence on April 20, 1946. He studied at the Istituto d’arte (Art Institute) and later enrolled in the Accademia de Belle Arti (Academy of Fine Arts) in Florence where he obtained his diploma in 1969. He traveled extensively in India, Turkey and throughout Europe before settling in Rome in 1970. He continued to work and exhibit often during the 1970’s having obtained a scholarship from the city of Mönchengladbach in Germany, he remained there to work from September 1980 until August 1981. He then moved to New York in1981-1982 and continued to work between New York and Ronciglione. Chia was an important part of the Italian Transavanguardia Movement in the 1980’s, founded by the art critic Achille Bonito Olivo. In the 1990’s, Sandro Chia purchased the Romitorio Castle in the town on Montalcino, home of Brunello wine. He currently lives and works between New York City, Montalcino and Rome. |
