Opening of the Mitoraj Museum in Pietrasanta: The Mitoraj Museum opens in Pietrasanta, showcasing 69 works by the sculptor
On Saturday 6 June 2026, the inauguration of the new and prestigious Mitoraj Museum will take place in Pietrasanta; this institution is dedicated to preserving and promoting the legacy of one of the most important sculptors of the 20th century.
Directed by architect Frank Boehm, the museum has been established thanks to the efforts of the Igor Mitoraj Museum Foundation, set up by the Ministry of Culture, the Region of Tuscany and the Municipality of Pietrasanta. A key factor in the realisation of the project was the generous donation of 69 works by the artist from Jean-Paul Sabatié, heir to Igor Mitoraj and current president of the Foundation.
The new museum will be housed in a location of great symbolic significance for the city: the building that until ten years ago housed the municipal market, now returned to the community following a major urban regeneration project. The spaces will host a permanent exhibition comprising sculptures in marble, bronze and resin, as well as a selection of extraordinary jewellery created by the artist.
Among the most significant works is 'Bocca della rocca bianca', created in 1985 from white Apuan marble. This monumental sculpture represents an exemplary synthesis of Mitoraj’s artistic vision, characterised by the constant tension between classical perfection and the sense of fragmentation and decay that pervades the contemporary world.
