Pablo Atchugarry: Scoprire la Luce, GNAMC, Rome
The Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Rome presents Scolpire la Luce, a solo exhibition by Pablo Atchugarry, curated by Gabriele Simongini, on view from May 19 to June 21, 2026.
The exhibition brings together approximately fifty works created over the past fifteen years, offering a comprehensive and coherent overview of the artist’s research. A master of the sculptural technique “per forza di levare,” following the tradition of Michelangelo Buonarroti, Atchugarry works primarily with marble, shaping vertical and dynamic compositions that evoke natural and architectural elements, in a constant balance between solidity and lightness, matter and light.
Alongside his renowned marble sculptures, the exhibition includes works in wood, alabaster, bronze, and steel, highlighting the diversity of materials and formal solutions developed by the artist. Characterized by incised surfaces and a rhythmic interplay of solids and voids, the sculptures generate a continuous dialogue between light and shadow, inviting a contemplative experience.
The exhibition is further enriched by a dialogue with major 20th-century masters from the museum’s permanent collection, including Jean Arp, Lucio Fontana, Alberto Giacometti, and Henry Moore, emphasizing the continuity between tradition and contemporaneity. On this occasion, as also noted in the critical contributions by Renata Cristina Mazzantini and Simongini himself, the artist donates the white marble sculpture Energy, specifically created to enter the museum’s collection.
